Improving PUE involves changes throughout the data center. Improving the ef?ciency of everything that
consumes power, right down to the lighting is taken into account. Energy plans have to be continually
monitored and tweaked, making sure system stability and uptime is not affected.
Data center ef?ciency is not optimized once then left alone; these are dynamic environments. Thermal
probes, sensors and power meters are installed in great numbers to control the power usage and understand
carbon emissions.
Changes are also achieved with the replacement of older technology, but modern blades and high power
volume servers can present a challenge when densely packed in the data center.
The sequence of power consuming equipment is shown in Figure 9.
